Tekken Nation's Review of Tekken 6 !
Extras (Continued)
Customizations:
Ok this has been significantly improved upon, and I thank Namco for this. Apart from the high prices, I really enjoy customizing my favourite characters. I hope namco build on this in future Tekken games.
Story and Endings:
I'm going to try to end this whole; “story never mattered in a Tekken game” and “go play a story based game, this is a fighter!” First of all, how do you define a story based game? There’s no gaming genre called “story”? Yes Tekken is a fighter and? I agree stories should not have the main attention in a fighter; in fact it should not be the main attention in any game. I do not expect stories from genres I expect them from series.
For example, Killzone fans won’t care about the story in Killzone 3, when it comes out; because it’s not something they grew up with when playing previous Killzone games. Halo fans will expect a good story in future Halo games. It’s something its fans learnt to grow up with, and will be disappointment if it where trash, same genre but two different series. Another example is Gears of War and Uncharted. Did any of us care about the Gears of war 2 story? Nope! But a lot of us were delighted by the Uncharted 2 story line!
I could not care less about the lack of story in VF5 and SF4; it’s something I’m familiar with. But Tekken on the other hand was different in my opinion. The endings in the PS 1 era felt rewarding, and story was worthwhile. In the PS2 generation we had modes called; “Story Mode”, see that important word; “Story”. We also had interludes, prologues and now a SC mode filled with cut scenes. Not to mention all the advertisement section, with the whole; “who will you fight for” and the constant trailers of Kazuya and Jin facing off, to me Namco were trying to hype us up, story wise.
You could argue that the story was always trash and that you never cared about it, but don’t you think it’s a stretch to say a story was never part of Tekken?
The sad thing is, is that Namco appeared to have attempted to provide a plot, but failed badly. The endings are noticeably worse than Tekken 5’s; who many claimed had the worst endings before Tekken 6 came out. I feel as if Namco put them there just to shut us up, and the length of each one is incredibly low. That’s all I can really say, because I do not want to spoil them for you, but be sure that the traditional rewarding feeling you used to have when unlocking them, in previous games, has long gone. As I said story is not everything in a game, but to have a Tekken game in the making for five years and have this shoved in our face, is simply not good enough. Please get some decent story writers Namco, we have members on TN; 13est, PschcoBlue, Tiexandrea etc who have provided a better storyline !
